What is BMI
Body mass index or BMI is actually the measurement of a person’s body shape based on the mass of a person and their height. Seems like a complicated math problem doesn’t it? Well your BMI would be the division of your body weight with your height. So if you weigh 130 pounds and have a height of 5 feet 3 inches which if you divide and multiply with 703, then your Body Mass Index ranges from 18.5-25. The Body Mass Index is the ratio between your weight and your height.
So why is it so important?
Your BMI is important to understand your diet. It helps you understand whether you are overweight or underweight. In the above case if your weight was lesser than 130 pounds at that height, then you would have underweight as your BMI would have been less than 18.5 and if you were more than 130 pounds then your BMI would have been over 25 which would mean that you are overweight or obese. By knowing your Body Mass Index you can base your diet accordingly and prevent health diseases such as heart attacks or may be even diabetes. It is better to safeguard yourself from health problems at an early stage.
So now you know why it is important to know your Body Mass Index. Sometimes however, this index can be insufficient as it does not take into account many other factors such as age, build, ethnicity or even muscle density. So the Body Mass Index gives you a general idea of your weight gain. It helps as guideline for your dieting schedule. Furthermore it is important that you consult your doctor or dietician before embarking on a weight loss or weight gain program as it is important to take the right supplements which are proper for your body type.
